Freshpod and the Rise of Fresh Frozen Meals in Singapore’s Health-Conscious Food Economy

The Kiosk That Redefines Frozen Convenience

At an unmanned kiosk in the lobby of Gleneagles Hospital, customers can order chilled fresh food bowls, mixing and matching a minimum of five ingredients from a selection of 15, with the bowl assembled within 90 seconds. A receipt printed upon collection lists the exact carbohydrate, protein, and fat content, and the calorie count for each order. The kiosk is the product of freshpod, a Singapore startup founded in 2021 that aims to make healthy ready-to-eat meals available around the clock.

The Rental and Labour Equation

“Healthy food shouldn’t be so expensive, and a lot of the reason why health food is expensive in Singapore is rentals,” says co-founder Stephen Dunstan, a former investment banker with JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs. The kiosk model eliminates the rental costs associated with traditional F&B outlets while maintaining the temperature-controlled environment required for fresh food safety. Ingredients are kept at temperatures between 1°C and 5°C and restocked daily, with unsold ingredients replaced to ensure freshness.

Why Fresh Frozen Is the Hybrid Consumers Want

Freshpod’s model sits at an interesting intersection: it is not a conventional frozen meal, but it leverages the same consumer desire that drives frozen food growth—convenience without compromise. The company is in talks with more private hospitals, office buildings, and universities to expand its reach, suggesting that the demand signal extends well beyond healthcare settings. The kiosk also caters to staff working overnight shifts and visitors who stay overnight, addressing use cases that traditional F&B outlets cannot serve cost-effectively.

The Technology Behind the Convenience

Each kiosk machine holds up to 20 ingredients in 20 separate pods, along with nine sauces and condiments. When a customer orders, ingredients are assembled in a serving bowl as the pods dispense portions of 60 grams each. An individual pod can hold up to 5 kilograms, with an alert sent when a pod has only 20% remaining. This pod-based mechanism minimises waste compared with scooping systems and enables real-time inventory monitoring.

The Broader Health and Convenience Convergence

Freshpod’s emergence reflects a broader convergence in Singapore’s food consumption patterns. The frozen fruit and vegetables market is growing at a CAGR exceeding 4.4%, driven by working professionals who want convenient solutions while maintaining nutrition standards. The same consumer segment that buys frozen berries for breakfast smoothies is the target audience for freshpod’s customizable bowls and for the ready meals that dominate Singapore’s frozen food market.

From Hospital Lobby to Mainstream

The Gleneagles kiosk, launched in August 2025, is the company’s third location, following installations at Science Park and Grab’s one-north headquarters. The expansion pattern—from corporate campuses to healthcare facilities—suggests a deliberate strategy of targeting locations with captive, health-aware audiences. As Singapore’s population ages and preventive healthcare gains prominence, the demand for accessible, nutritionally transparent meal options is likely to accelerate.

What the Frozen Food Industry Can Learn

Freshpod’s model demonstrates that convenience and health are not opposing forces. The startup’s success in deploying automated, temperature-controlled food retail infrastructure points to a future where the boundaries between fresh, chilled, and frozen food formats blur in service of consumer needs. For frozen food manufacturers, the lesson is clear: transparency, nutrition, and accessibility are becoming table stakes. The brands that thrive in Singapore’s evolving food economy will be those that treat frozen and chilled formats as complementary tools for delivering on consumer expectations, not as separate product categories.
